vSphere NIC Matrix

There has been quite a bit of discussion on a few of my vSphere lab posts around what network cards work (and don’t work) with the various versions of VMware ESX/ESXi.  As such I thought it useful to put together a VMware vSphere Network Card Compatibility Matrix which I will keep populated with the details of those network cards I own and know to work with the various versions of VMware ESX/ESXi.  I will add this post to the site’s list of permanent pages at the top of the page as a resource for others.

VMware-vSphere-Network-Card-Compatib[1]Let’s make this matrix a useful community project so feel free to leave a comment at the bottom of this post (template below) with details on those network cards that you have found to work or not work, I will add them to this compatibility matrix.  Of course, this matrix will contain those network cards both on and off of the official VMware hardware compatibility matrix which can be found here.

    Very helpful.

I was looking to purchase the NC364T but it’s quite expensive for a home lab.

Have you looked at the i340? I am looking to install 2 quad cards on two ML110 G6′s

Let me know your thoughts when possible,

    Many thanks for your help,

    G.

    Hi Gabi,

I’ve never used a Intel i340 NIC unfortunately, so can’t confirm from experience whether they work or not. Maybe one of the TechHead readers may be able to let us know? There is an i340 entry in the VMware compatibility list here: http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/vcl/result.php?search=i340&searchCategory=all

Have you considered perhaps using VLANs and just the existing onboard NIC of the ML110 G6 (assuming this is for a lab environment)? This’d be a cheaper option – assuming you have a Gb switch that can handle VLANs ok.

Sorry I can’t be of much help with this one.

    Good luck,

    Simon
