VMware ESX Lab – Installing ESX on an HP Proliant ML110 G4. Potential Issues

# VMware

I have had a good response from my article on building a VMware test/lab environment running on a HP ML110 G4. There does however seem to be some confusion in the VM ESX community around what models of the ML110 and ML115 can run ESX and if there are any workarounds for those that don’t work ‘out of the box’ with ESX v3.5.

This is the first article of a series in which I will try to assist in clarifying what works, what doesn’t and any work arounds (where applicable).  I will be covering the ML110 G4 & G5 and the ML115 G5.

In this first posting I’ll start with the Proliant ML110 G4.

This is the server I use in my home ESX lab and can confirm that it works just fine with ESX v3.5.  Both the Disk Controller (ie: it detects the SATA disks as being SCSI and VMFS capable) and the Network Card.   I should point out that the G4 model has been superceeded by the G5 model  for sometime now which isn’t fully compatible.  I will go into more detail on this in a upcoming article on the ML110 G5.

There is one gotcha however with the G4 model and that is around the different CPU’s available within this model.

For ESX to run x64 OS’s it requires that the server it is running on has Intel Virtualization Technology  (VT) capabilities on the Processor.

Below is a list of those CPU variations that are/were available with the ML110 G4 model.  I have 2 of these servers which have the Dual-Core Intel Xeon 3040 processor.

image

This next table below is from Intel (click on it to see it full size or here for the link to the Intel site) and outlines those Pentium D CPU’s which have the Intel VT technology onboard and those that don’t

image

As you can see Intel Pentium D 820, 915, 925, 935 & 945 Processors all don’t have Intel VT on the die thereby leaving the Intel Xeon 3040 and 3050 as the only Processors with Intel VT.

So this means if you’re looking at buying an ML110 G4 for your VMware ESX test lab and are wanting to run x64 Operating Systems and fully harness the extra power that VT offers then purchase one of these (Xeon) two CPU models and not one of the Pentium D’s.

Finally, when if you do buy an HP ML110 G4 remember to go into the BIOS and enable VT as it’s turned off by default!

UPDATE: 24th September 2008.

I have just gone to install a pair of OCZ 2GB PC2-6400 memory modules into my second ML110 G4 (until now I was only running it with 2 x 1GB generic RAM) and was greeted with a steady beeping noise from the server and nothing else.  I tried swapping the modules around, re-seating them, only using one to no avail.

It would appear that these modules are not compatible with the ML110 G4 – although in theory from their specification they should be.  I can confirm however the these particular OCZ memory modules do work in the ML110 G5 without any problems.  I guess I will just have to add these to my ML110 G5, taking it up to 8GB.  :)

I will have to look at getting a pair of Corsair 2GB XMS modules instead.

Below:  A picture of the OCZ memory with Gold heat spreaders and the tried and tested Corsair XMS memory.

Hey there, great articles you’ve done here – unfortunately I didn’t read them carefully enough and pranced off to buy an ML110 G5 without reading the caveat above, “G5 model … which isn’t fully compatible”.
I’ve had a variety of problems getting this to work, I’ve tried ESX 3.5 and ESXi 3.5 and get to different stages with both. ESX doesn’t seem to like the NIC fullstop, (obviously I could replace it but I’m more worried about…) ESXi lets me get all the way through picking an available drive (I’ve got 3 SATA drives in there) and then loads exactly 44% of the way on before saying that there’s a disk write error. It mumbles something about bad sectors too. I’ve tried it on all 3 disks and they all get exactly the same percentage in before failing. So I don’t reckon it’s the disks.
Anyway, I know you’re not VMWare support (although they’re not going to help me I know), just wanted to say “great article” and I can’t wait for the ML110 G5 follow-up one that you’ve mentioned. No pressure or anything. :P

    Hi Loz,

Thanks for the feedback – much appreciated.

Hmm, sounds like a strange issue you’re having. According to a number of forum posts ESXi 3.5 should install on the ML110 G5.

I am tempted to get one to test this – as there are some £95 pound deals on this server at the moment.

Here’s a link to a VMware Forum article, with screen shots, where the writer informs that he had no problem installing it.

    http://communities.vmware.com/message/991040#991040

Definitely an unusal sounding problem you’re having with the drives. Have you tried installing ESX with only 1 of the drive connected? How do you usually have the 3 drives configured, eg: single RAID 5 set?

    Let me know.

    Cheers,

    Simon :)

  4. LoZ says:

    Hi Simon,

Cool, ultra quick response on this comment – thanks.

I haven’t yet tried installing ESXi with just the one SATA drive (that came with the box) connected. That’s another thing I could try. Probably have to wait til tomorrow as fiddling around inside a server after getting back from the pub will end in tears. :)

Basically the setup is 3 SATA disks (2x250GB disks I added myself) running from the same onboard controller. I have switched RAID off (no drives seen at all with it switched on) as all the forums say to reset the BIOS to defaults, enable VT and set the SATA mode from ‘AUTO’ to ‘SATA Native’ or something like that.

Anyway, I’ll post back here when I’ve tried disconnecting the additional disks.

Thanks for the advice, enjoy your weekend.

    Hi
I’m seeing this problem as well, I’ve two HP ML110 G5s and both are showing the same problem that Loz descripes. The Install stops saying Could not write image to the disk selected. The both boxes are as supplied by HP, but with VT enabled and the SATA set to serial ATA as others have discussed. Hyper V works fine, but then it would :)
I’ve upgraded the BIOS to the latest version as others have suggested but its made no difference.
Any help much appricated, but a new SATA card might be my best bet.
    Cheers

  6. Kiwi Si says:

    Hi Stubzy,

Can you confirm what version of ESX you’re trying to install (ie: ESX v3.5 or ESXi v3.5)?

There are quite a few reports that ESXi v3.5 works out of the box (abeit making the SATA and VT BIOS changes). Eg: http://communities.vmware.com/message/991040#991040

Jamie Starr who wrote this Forum entry informs that the HP part number of his Proliant ML110 G5 is 455948-035. Though unlikely maybe there maybe some component revision differences between some of ML110 G5 models.

If people could post what the part number is of their ML110 G5 server along with the version of ESX they are trying to install (eg: ESX Vs ESXi Vs ESX U2, etc) this will help in building up a picture of what is working. I will then compile this into a table and post it on the blog.

    Cheers,

    Simon

  7. FastLaneJB says:

I’ve got a HP ML110 G5 and ran into the same error at 44%. I have it working now and on this box by copying the image onto a 1GB USB Flash Drive (There’s articles out there on the net).

There’s a proper internal USB port on the motherboard that I’ve plugged the flash drive into. It will then boot and format the HDD just fine. That’s with SATA set to Native SATA instead of RAID of course (Not tried RAID but no one has said it works).

This anyway gets you around the install problem and everything seems to work fine then.

    Hi there,

    My ML110 G5 hasn’t turned up yet though I can confirm that my 2 x ML110 G4′s are running with 2 x 2GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 PC2-6400 DIMM’s in one and the other has 2 x 2GB OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 DIMM’s. I haven’t experienced any problems with either.

The G4 model only supports PC2-5300 speed memory though I bought the faster memory in case I ever wanted to move it into a G5 that can take the faster speed. There was only something like £2 difference.

Being based in London I buy my memory from YoyoTech just off of Tottenham Court Road in the centre though have bought memory from OverClockers (www.overclockers.co.uk) when I am more patient and can wait a couple of days for delivery.

Both the Corsair and the OCZ (both come with heat spreaders) are only costing me about £64 incl VAT for a matched pack of 2 x 2GB DIMMS.

Wow! Just checked out OverClockers.co.uk site and they are doing a 2 x 2GB 6400 DDR2 GEIL memory pack for £48 inc VAT!!!!! So you could put 8GB into an ML110 or ML115 G4/G5 for less that £100. That’s not bad at all. This deal only appears valid for this week though. I can’t guarentee this memory will work but in theory it should.

I may have to buy some for my new ML110 G5 – when it turns up. :)

Thanks for that link Simon – I’ve just ordered 2x (2x2GB) from Overclockers, what a deal. Helped that they sent me a 10% voucher code a couple of days back because I hadn’t shopped on there in a year or so!

Obviously this is all purely speculative because I haven’t even managed to get ESX(i) installed on the server yet but on the strength of other people’s experiences the workaround seems to do the trick and I’m happy to sacrifice a 1GB USB stick for the cause.

I’ll post back here once I’ve tested the USB boot workaround.

LoZ / Simon – thanks for the information, I too have placed an order with Overclockers for 8GB RAM which should be arriving tomorrow.
Further to LoZ’s query concerning the UHB stick – When the Ramstick is in place the hypervisor appears to boot from it, so I guess it will have to remain in-situ. I think I will fit an approved controller card in due course so that I can use RAID and also ditch the Ramstick. I haven’t had time to play with ESXi, other than fiddle with the IP & security settings; I’ve yet to install a VM but will attempt to do so over the weekend.
Has anyone else bought the lights out board for the G5? Mine arrived yesterday and I have just submitted a claim form to HP to refund the purchase price. In case you’re not aware of this offer – if qualifying Proliant hardware and remote support products are purchased this month, the cost of the latter (less VAT) will be refunded by HP. For details see http://h40059.www4.hp.com/proliantinsightcontrol/index.html I couldn’t get both products from the same supplier so have submitted two invoices to HP – I hope they will honour them. Virtually every UK supplier has now run out of the lights out remote management board for the ML110 G5 (HP part number 445512-B21) but IT247 still have some stock http://www.it247.com Be aware that there are several similar products for other servers i.e. the G4, which are not compatible. Well, I may have just thrown my money down the drain because the USB workaround didn’t work for me. Using a 2GB Corsair Flash Voyager and following the instructions on that link I pasted just gives me “no operating system found” even though the bios sees the Voyager as a removable drive.
I’ve even chucked Win98SE bootable on the Voyager and that boots fine so I guess it’s not the device.
    This is getting frustrating!

Sorry to hear of your problems LoZ, I can think of five potential differences between your machine and mine – Bios (I upgraded to the latest), Bios settings, Additional NIC card used(mine’s an Intel PRO/1000 GT PCI card), USB stick used (unlikely), or finally HP may have changed the design of the G5.
Have you tried using the ESXi prepared USB stick on a different computer temporarily to see if it starts to boot? Maybe worth a try, I should disable the HDD on that machine first, just in case.
I managed to import a Windows XP VM last night and it works very well.

    Thanks Fungus,

Re: the potential differences. You mention upgrading the bios – I looked into that but could only find ways to do it with HP SoftPaq, which seemed to require an existing installed operating system. Is that your experience?
The bios settings are bog standard: F9 reset to defaults, then change to SATA from ‘Auto’, and enable VT. I’ve got a whole lot further using the boot CD with those settings.
It’s very confusing, the USB stick seems to have been set up properly (there’s a 4mb partition with some Linux boot files and 3 other partitions with various other stuff) and as I said in the previous post setting it up to be a bootable Win98SE disk worked fine. I will try the USB disk in another machine as you suggested.
Good to hear that once I get past these annoyances that ESXi actually works properly, I presume that you could format your HDD(s) using VMFS?
Anyway, I think if the USB route doesn’t work I’ll search for an approved SATA controller and go back to the CD install method. I just hate throwing money at something when I’m not 100% sure that it’ll work at the end of it.

LoZ – I used an easier method than Jeroen’s suggestion. I went to the HP site, selected software & driver downloads then searched for the ML110 G5. I then selected Windows Server 2003, then BIOS – System ROM, then downloaded the Systems ROMPaq into a directory on an XP machine – From that directory I ran the file after which a web page came up with several options, one of which was a means of automatically creating an autoboot USB device, which when created could be used on the ML110 to flash the BIOS. This all worked fine and I then deleted all the stuff off the XP machine. Afterwards I reused the ramstick for ESXi. Will respond to your other points when I get back from work. Cheers Fungus.

Thanks for the bios flash suggestions guys, it was a lot easier than it looked. Trouble is it made no difference at all!
I tried booting another machine off the flash drive and it went straight into ESXi fine. The ProLiant just does not want to know. I’m borrowing a friend’s flash drive this weekend to see if it’s a hardware incompatibility issue. The odd thing is that it allowed me to boot from Win98SE on the ProLiant from the same flash drive.
I’ve checked the USB boot options and from memory there are two. The first one is the boot priority (which I have set to ‘High’). Can’t remember what the other one is but it’ll be ‘enabled’ or something like that. In boot order ‘Removable Drive’ is at the top of the list and if I expand it I see the Corsair Flash Voyager drive. But I get nothing but ‘Operating System Not Found’ immediately after the POST/Boot Summary screens.
My 8GB RAM turned up this morning so I’ll chuck that into my (getting more expensive by the minute) server/doorstop.
Further developments over the weekend no doubt, thanks for all the information and pointers.

Attempting to boot with the SATA controller set to native causes the machine to hang at the point where I’m prompted to press ‘Enter’ to begin installation.
So, with the controller set to Auto, I can select a disk and begin the install. However, the installation procedure hangs at 99%. This is with Speedstep off, VT either on or off (doesn’t seem to matter), installing from a CD.

    Tried ESX 3i 3.5 Update 2 on a ML110 G4 … no success
    - ML110 G4, BIOS 010, Intel Dual Core 925 CPU (no VT setting in BIOS).
    - 8 GB RAM, 2 * 500 GB SATA HDD

Tried all possible disk settings combinations, always freezes at the install screen. Seems similar to above issue.

    Any suggestions greatfully recieved?

Tryed USB boot (ESXi installed on it) on a ML110 g4. Boots fine but gets frozen once started; apparently frozen ‘cos you can switch between consoles, but isn’t working. Can’t configure it, neither connect with infrastructure client.

    Suggestions appreciated?

By the way, great post… ;)

    Hi Yeohsli,

It would most likely be possible though I have never seen a Pentium D ML110 version before so can’t really comment as to whether the underlying chipset of the motherboard is the same. This may be the limiting factor.

If you haven’t bought an ML110/ML115 already I would recommend going straight to a Xeon Dual or Quad Core – if your budget allows. At least this way there is no risk involved, else you could end up with a spare Xeon Processor on your hands.

Unfortunately I don’t have a definitive answer though if anyone else out there has upgraded their ML110/ML115 please let us know.

    Cheers,

    Simon

I have exactly the same issue with this system. If you leave the system in this state for long enough (I checked after about 30 mins) there is a pink screen with a dump of registers..

Anyone have any luck finding a solution? I’ve been forced to go with VMware server 2.0

Hi – I have ML110 G5 and successfully installed ESXi 3.5 using a USB device as boot device. The box has 8 GBytes RAM, a 100c lights out card and an additional Intel NIC in the PCI slot; it worked flawlessly for weeks. I now need resilience on this machine so last week I installed an HP e200i disk controller connected to 3 x 1TByte Samsung SATA drives configured as a RAID 5 array, I reinstalled ESXi, but this time to boot from the array not the USB stick – another faultless install and I ported a couple of VM’s over both which of which worked fine over the weekend, I also noticed a distinct performance increase over the old system. Before proceeding further with this configuration I decided for my final build to utilise a further Samsung 1 TByte drive, delete the original 3 disk array and create a new 4 disk RAID 5 array. As far as the HP configuration went I hit no snags and all appeared to be well – until I tried reinstalling ESXi. After accepting the VMWare EULA message the installation now hangs every time saying that it’s unable to find a supported device to write the VMWare Server 3i 3.5.0 image to. This is bizarre as it negotiated this step without any problems a couple of days ago when writing to 3 disk array and I’ve changed nothing else. Does anyone have any ideas? I’m loath to back to the USB boot method. Cheers Fungus

Just want to make sure, I’m not missing anything to configure. I even tried to disable the Onboard-Controller completely when booting from USB. The only Advance I made is switching on the 5042 Keyboard Emulation, which allows booting .. but F2 or F12 are not responding …

I have got HP ProLiant ML110 G4 Xeon 3040 1860-2MB/1066 Dual Core, 1x512MB, Non Hot Plug SATA 160GB, DVD/CD-RW which I have installed ESX 3.0.2 and all ruuning fine but I had to buy a RAID controller so that it can see the SATA drives as SCSI.

Regaring how to enable VT in bios, not sure how to go about it but i believe i have enabled in bios and can someone point me on how to enable the VT when booting up.

When I checked the configuration of the ESX host machine in VI client, it says Hyperthreading is Disabled (Enabled on restart) (Not Active)*.

Is VT a seperate technology from Hyperthreading? Can any of you that has the ML110 G4 and got VT enable to check the configuration of the host ESX and see if Hyperthreading is enabled.

    thanks

Hyperthreading and VT (Virtualization support) are 2 completely different things.
Hypertheading does not need to be enabled for ESX. Most people even recommend against enabling it in ESX.

If you do not enable VT (virtualization) in the BIOS, ESX will run fine too, however you will not be able to create 64bit guests, only 32bit.

It sounds like you need to change the onboard disk controllers ‘Native Mode Operation’ from the default setting of ‘Auto’ to ‘Serial ATA’ in the BIOS.

    Hope this fixes your problem.
