Call for Information! Compiling details on VMware ESX compatibility with HP Proliant ML110 and Ml115’s models.

# VMware

Hi all,

I am looking at compiling information on, and presenting via the site, peoples experiences with running VMware ESX (versions 3.0-v3.5, including v3i) on HP Proliant ML110 and Ml115 servers.  I get quite a few queries regarding what is compatible and what isn’t so thought it be a good idea to compile this information, including workarounds, gotchas and hot deals in an easy to follow format.

These are great little, cost effective servers that make an ideal ESX test environment.

If you can let me know what you have found to work for you, were any tweaks/workarounds required along with any other information you think may be useful to others.

I can confirm that the ML110 onboard storage controller and onboard NIC’s work just fine under v3.5.  See my previous blog article here for more information.

Here’s a rough outline of information to give a basic example.  This will be a work in progress and a fresh blog article created to house this information.

UPDATE: Check out my blog article here on installing VMware ESX 3i 3.5 on an ML110 G5.

Make/Model: Disk Controller: NIC: Work Around?
ML110 G4 SC44Ge NC320i N/A
ML110 G5   NC105i
ML115   NC320i
ML115 G5   NC105i

HP Virtual Connect Modules De-Mystified

Hewlett Packard (HP)

Head on over to vinf.net for a really informative posting on how HP Virtual Connect (VC) modules work.  These modules can initially cause some real confusion and can take a while to get your head around how they work.

Virtual Connect modules are an option for the HP C7000 Blade Chassis, they offer great flexibility and can reduce the time taken should you ever need to swap out one of your HP Proliant Blades due to hardware failure.

The article starts by giving some basic background information on VC’s and then proceeds to give clear and easy to follow details on areas such as configuration, port mappings and fail-over.

Definitely worth a read!

Emergency Management Services (EMS) Connection Detected

Microsoft

When installing Windows Server 2003 on an HP Blade BL460c I received the following prompt box during the installation process.

In this instance I just had to cancel this dialogue box.

This Microsoft article gives the following outline on EMS:

“Emergency Management Services (EMS)  is a technology in Windows Server 2003 that supports remote management and system recovery for servers that are not accessible through an in-band connection.

An in-band connection is a connection between two computers that relies on a standard network, such as a local area network (LAN) or the Internet, and on standard remote administration tools, such as Remote Desktop or Telnet. You can use this type of connection to remotely manage computers only if both the local and remote computers are in a functional state and accessible on the network.

Emergency Management Services redirects text output to the out-of-band connection. An out-of-band connection is a nonstandard connection between two computers, such as a serial port connection, and is useful when a remote server cannot access the network or is not fully functional. Emergency Management Services provides a command-line environment for managing a server through the out-of-band port. The capability of redirecting text output is also known as console redirection.”

You can also perform an unattended EMS installation of Windows Server 2003 here is a Microsoft Knowledge Base article that outlines the steps.
