Can you run a x64 OS VM under VMware vSphere on an HP Microserver?

Hewlett Packard (HP) VMware

I was recently asked by a TechHead reader whether the HP Microserver’s AMD Athlon II Neo based CPU, the N36L (on older models) or the N40L (on newer models), has AMD-V capabilities and can support x64 operating systems, for example Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2.  This definitely warranted a quick post just to help clarify things, as this may be a question that HP Microservercrossed the minds of a few of you.

Well, the good news is that both the AMD Athlon II Neo N36L & N40L processors have the AMD-V virtualization instructions on the CPU and are capable of running x64 operating system based VMs under VMware vSphere.  And to prove this, here is a couple of screen shots from one of my HP Microservers (N36L) running VMware ESXi 5 with a Windows Server 2008 R2 (x64) VM.

HP Microserver vSphere 5 x64 OS

Will an x64 OS run on an HP Microserver running vSphere 5

Hope this helps answer this question, and as always feel free to drop me a line with any such questions.  Thanks to Adam McAndrew for the original question that inspired this post.

VMware Solution Exchange – the new way to shop?

VMware

VMware have recently launched a software marketplace where VMware vendors and developers can peddle their wares to VMware end users.    This new social media integrated shop front has been called the “VMware Solution Exchange” and has been designed to target VMware users from businesses of all sizes who are using either private, public or both forms of Cloud.

For this new ‘solution exchange’ VMware has a healthy eco-system of technology partners and development shops to draw on, over 2000 in fact.  Like so many online marketplaces that you find online these days the VMware ‘Solutions Exchange’ provides the ability for customers to interact and communicate with the partners and developers who pitch their product on this virtual storefront.  Customers can also provide rankings and reviews on the products thereby providing valuable feedback to others, including the vendors.

VMware Solutions Exchange

I personally am a big fan of online marketplaces and from the popularity seen in alternative marketplaces such as Apple’s AppStore I can see this mechanism of testing, reviewing, providing feedback and purchasing growing in popularity for VMware and its partners.  You can check out the VMware online marketplace here.

“The operation is not supported on the object” – vSphere vApp Deployment Error

VMware

When going to deploy a VMware vSphere OVA based vApp package you may receive the following vague error message: “The OVF package is invalid and cannot be deployed” along with “The operation is not supported on the object”.  The latter part of this error message is the message which is more specific to this particular error.

One possible cause for the “The operation is not supported on the object” error message is that you are trying to deploy the vApp into a vSphere host cluster with a single host and/or where DRS isn’t enabled.  Admittedly this is something of a generic error message, though this is definitely something worth checking and I have received this error message a few times before via the scenario outlined above.

OVF The operation is not supported on the object

If this isn’t the cause of your error or you have a variation of the “The OVF package is invalid and cannot be deployed” error message (which can cover a number of errors) then I recommend you take a look at the VMware community forums here.

VOTE NOW – Top 25 VMware Virtualization Blogs

VMware

Well folks, it’s that time again when Eric Siebert from vSphere-Land.com kicks off voting for the ‘Top 25 VMware Virtualization Blogs’. As he points out in his blog post here,  there are now over vote180 blogs dedicated to VMware and Virtualization – this is definitely an impressive number which is a real indication to how passionate people feel towards the VMware range of products and virtualization in general.  The voting runs 7th February with only one round of voting being allowed per IP address – so those of you using a corporate internet connection, get in early.  :)

The voting is very straight forward and will only take 1 – 2 minutes of your time, all you have to do is select your Top 10 favourite VMware related virtualization blog sites and then sort them in your order of preference (ie: 1 – 10) – it’s as easy as that!

If you enjoy the VMware and virtualization content I post about and/or maybe the vChat webcasts and would consider casting a vote for TechHead it’d be much appreciated as it is a nice indicator for me that people enjoy and get value from the site – though of course I also really like talking with readers via the comments of the various posts.

Thanks for reading TechHead and as always feedback always welcome!
