*** UPDATE – 21st April 2009 ***
Prices on the HP ML115 G5’s are once again creeping back up and there is once again very little difference in pricing between suppliers.
ServersPlus are still offering TechHead readers free delivery on all HP Proliant ML110 and ML115 G5 servers. To get this deal you will have to call them – as opposed to order the server(s) online.
Also, check out the new TechHead ‘Hot Deals’ section at the top of the page for the latest deals on servers and other IT components I come across.
Let me know if you come across any good pricing or deals on either the HP ML110, ML115 and associated memory, etc and I will post it to let others know.
Thanks,
Si
*** UPDATE – 26th March 2009 ***
ServersPlus are offering this HP Proliant ML115 G5 Quad Core server for £149.99 ex VAT. If you call them mention TechHead and you will receive free delivery, saving you a few more £££ !
I should point out that although that this release of the server only comes with a 1 year warranty and a 160GB hard disk, as opposed to a 3 year warranty and a 250GB hard disk. For many of us using these servers for our home or work labs this won’t be too much of an issue.
*** UPDATE – 16th January 2009 ***
The prices has been fluctuating in recent weeks and have increased now to £249.97 + VAT.
Despite the price increase this is still a great little server for the money.
I believe the ILO 100 cash-back deal runs until the end of Jan 09 – though double check this before ordering.
********************************
*** UPDATE – 11TH DECEMBER 2008 ***
The price has dropped again and is now £139.97 ex VAT – just a reminder quote ‘TechHead’ and get free delivery!
Also, don’t forget to buy an ILO 100 card and claim back the cost from HP – thereby making it free..

Can you confirm which machine this discount applies too as under your note you state it applies to the ml110 and at the top you say it applies to the ml115

Doh – typo.
Thanks for pointing it out and apologies for any confusion.

This is fantastic!
Combined with the free iLO card and the cheap Corsair memory this is a great deal!
I’m going to ebay my current 2xML110 G4 (4gb RAM) and order 2 of these!
Nice one Simon!!
[Reply]
Simon,
Thanks for the very informative blog. Appreciate that a full article can take time but can you let someone making their first foray into virtualisation know before splashing out please…. does this model seem to run ESXi ok or are you having to work to get it running?
Cheers

Hi Hunyadi,
I’ve started putting a blog posting together and so far I can confirm the following:
- Unable to install ESXi U3 onto the onboard hard disk.
- Can install ESXi U3 onto a USB pen drive (£5 Verbatim USB2) and boot successfully off of this via the external/internal USB port – at this point ESXi see’s the internal SATA hard disk which can be partitioned as VMFS3 disk space.
- Won’t install with less than 1GB of memory – it comes with 512MB as standard. Though realistically this isn’t enough anyway to run ESX and a VM instance.
Hope this helps. I will have the blog posting up hopefully in the next couple of days – work permitting.
If you do end up ordering one can you let ServersDirect that you came from the TechHead.co.uk site – this may put me in good stead for future discounts to readers – thanks.
Cheers,
Simon
[Reply]
Many thanks for the quick and helpful update Simon! Will keep an eye out for the posting in the near future – and naturally will be sure to mention the site when ordering as well.
My plan was to run from the internal USB drive and 8GB RAM so this news, the discount and Sony’s note above about the iLO board means it’s looking like a good way forward.
(Based on reading contributions here and elsewhere I think I’ll aim to build in an E200 smart array eventually as well.)
Keep up the good work.
Cheers

Si, keep these deals coming mate

Interesting Sony, Mine was an earlier order reference (by about 800) and speaking with them on phone this morning about the order I made earlier this week it transpired they have no iLO cards in stock….. and that’s why my next day delivery didn’t happen on the 26th…. Also they told me they couldn’t get stock in before the 30th and so couldn’t give me the invoice required for the HP moneyback deal…… apparently the stock levels displayed online aren’t accurate. When did you place your order and have you spoken to them on the phone?
[Reply]
Hi Hunyadi, not sure who gave you that info sorry? Stock is available on the ILO cards and stock is 99% accurate on the site. The good news is that the offer has been extended for December meaning you can still claim the cash back on the ILO and as Simon has alluded to above, the price is now £179.97!
Any problems, please give us a call on the sales number and ask for Ben.
Hope this helps?
[Reply]
Thanks for the headsup James – does help and is much appreciated.
For the record – the apparently naff info came from the customer services agent I spoke to on Friday morning when I was querying late delivery.
Ben called me this afternoon to clarify the stock situation and updated the order to include the card – should take delivery of the server (and card hopefully) tomorrow.
Cheers

Hi Sony,
Glad you found the deal useful. Have you taken ownership of your new purchase yet?

£136 ex vat for the same server. 17 in stock, as well as the lights out card in stock. Delivery is about £20 so in effect the transaction is VAT free compared to ‘serversdirect’ ( who as ‘laptopsdirect’ have a pretty bad rep!) so maybe when you’re on the phone to get you’re ‘free’ delivery maybe you can barter them down?….
approx £310 inc delivery, control card and VAT and HP will refund the £130 or so cost of the card – bargain!
[Reply]
Just an update, despite showing 17 kikatek have none in stock! However, other suppliers do, such as micom international. Although their prices is more expensive than kikatek @140 ex vat they only charge £8 delivery not £22 so overall my transaction inc the ‘free’ card is £2 cheaper than kikatek. Micom show 501 units in stock but only 16 cards. The terms state they have to be on the *same* invoice.

If they can’t supply I’ll post another update….
[Reply]
Hi FluffCat,
Thanks for the info – let us know if your order comes through ok.
Si
[Reply]
Willdo. Stock’s gone down to 500 ( funny, other, possibly linked suppliers still show 501…. I doubt *anyone* other than hp has 501 of these!) but it seems some suppliers don’t also have the card in stock. Hope Kikatek refund my card promptly need some ram for it….
[Reply]
Hi guys,
I’m waiting to hear back from HP on some price protection as they have just announced a further price drop on that model-and unlike others we do hold stock.
With regards to the other comments posted by Fluffcat1, I can confirm that we are owned by the same parent company as LaptopsDirect but run as a seperate entity and can assure you of only the highest levels of customer service and both pre and post sales support. I’m happy for Si to forward my direct contact details to anyone who should have any issues.
Also just to confirm that the free delivery offer is genuine and as someone on this forum has already paid testimony to.
Now all it leaves me is to sort out the price issue with HP and get back to you.
Thanks
[Reply]
Hi James, the ‘free’ delivery was in quotation marks to emphasise a point, not to claim it wasn’t genuine. I’ll offer ‘free’ delivery on the half eaten packet of hobnobs on my desk to anyone who buys them – but I’ll charge you £50 more than Tesco do for a full packet…..it’s the OVERALL transaction cost that’s important.
Easycom t/a laptopsdirect have many, many complaints on the internet – double billing cards, refusing warranty claims, charging extortinate restocking fees despite the DSR’s etc etc. Now I know the biggest targets are always easiest to hit but the complaints level outstrips the likes of Pissy Wurld in some forums!
I’ve never bought from easycom. I *nearly* bought from ‘acerdirect’ – another not-really-arms-length arm of the company trading from the same building, until I noticed morgancomputers had the same model £50 cheaper and didn’t have terms that contradicted basic UK consumer rights….
I also had an order for a CDA microwave with tradeappliances before they went bankrupt and easycom picked up the business *days* later yet left previous customers to deal with card companies etc – hence me knowing a little about them!
Serversdirect current ‘owners’ website according to wayback took over the URL in July 2007 from it’s former owner and are based in the same building ( for collections etc) as laptops direct. I doubt they are that seperate – maybe a couple of partitions in an open plan office away but the ‘best practice’ will be set from above and the operators will be trained by the same people, most likely answer the same phones and try on the same things detailed in the laptopdirect complaints.
This article: http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/and/All-work-and-no-play.4564524.jp dated oct ’08 say’s serversdirect has ‘just launched’
But anyway, facts are facts and your price is still £40 more than everyone else…
(Stock down to 180 from 501 at the previous mentioned URL btw)
Hope this makes someone think carefully….I’m sure serversdirect are fine if you want to pay £40 more and regularly check your card statement for double billing…
[Reply]
Fluffcat1, I wouldn’t suggest that anybody pays any more than they need to for this server. We have consistently been the cheapest stockist of this item, up until the afore mentioned price drop.
I’m hoping to realign the pricing soon, as well as offering a further exclusive deal to the Techhead readers, as we have also done all along.
I wasn’t looking to cause an argument merely offer my personal assurances that we will offer the highest levels of service to customers and that anybody with any concerns is welcome to contact me directly.
We also have several contact numbers on the site in addition to a livechat facility which is hosted by HP/Microsoft accredited sales specialists.
Whilst I cannot speak directly for other areas of the business, I know for a fact that we have never knowingly double charged anyone for anything purchased through one of our brands and to suggest otherwise is simply incorrect and bordering on something more serious.
I’m genuinely sorry that you had a bad time with the purchase of your microwave but as with any other brand which is bought out of receivership the debts are owned by a different, previous legal entity or the receivers themselves-hence why it is not always possible (or admittedly desirable) to handle such enquiries.
I am surprised however at how vehemently anti Easy Computers you are having not actually dealt directly with us yourself.
I’m conscious that we’re beginning to deviate from the purpose of this thread and so won’t take up anymore space-except to say that I think it is important to be able to present a balanced viewpoint.
Thanks
James
[Reply]
James,
You’re overpriced on a lot of stuff, not just the ml115. I never suggested your ‘different arm’ of the easycomp company recently setup in the same building as all the other ‘brands’ had had any of these complaints specifically ( read me comments again) – but as a relatively new entity according to press it’s unlikely these would have happened and been reported. Yet.
HOWEVER – your parent company has a well documented history of problems with customer service that can be easily found using google.
http://www.ciao.co.uk/www_laptopsdirect_co_uk__Review_5580360
The mentioning of the microwave was merely a disclousre of prior contact hence knowledge of the company and their ‘interesting’ business practices pre ‘serversdirect’. They took over tradeappliance’s website URL, phone number and mailing list *immediatley* and removed any helpful info for previous customers or information regarding who to contact etc and from other reports when contacted the next day on the previous co’s order number wouldn’t even give out the details of how to contact the receiver! Not the most helpful of practices when most people ringing that number don’t want to be sold another item…
(The recevier ending up contacting me btw and I got my money back easily from my card co.)
My point is your parent group has a lot of bad reviews on the internet and has treated people quite badly previously. Apples never fall too far from the tree do they? Especially if the apple tree is in the same building….
As for ‘bordering on something more serious’ – Oh really? Says who? All I am doing is mentioning what is elsewhere on the internet namely reports and reviews of your parent company. Everything mentioned regarding easycom t/a laptopsdirect can be quickly and easily verified using google. I’m not ‘vehemently anti Easy Computers’ merely pointing out that others are for various reasons but you’re doing a good job of evangelising me to be. Bring it on if you wish. I can source statements backing everything up. Do you *really* want bad p.r that badly?…
[Reply]
Fluffcat1, this is getting a little silly now. I’ve done my best to respond to your comments openly and honestly and am not sure why you are so keen to persist in this vein.
Si runs an excellent site here for people who have a genuine interest and I’m afraid we are risking spoiling that for others.
If you have any further questions perhaps you could forward them to me directly-Si has my contact details.
For the record Serversdirect launched in October 2007 in which time has attained, Microsoft Gold Partner, HP Gold Preferred Partner and Microsoft Small Business Specialist Status.
[Reply]
Wow, so you’ve reached an M$ £value sales target, employ a couple of MCP’s ( note not MCSA or MCSE, just plain ol’ MCP’s) and have paid a registration fee. Well done! No really..
Doesn’t mean you’re any good handling customer complaints or give good sales service for hardware…. which was the whole point of mentioning the parent groups’ widely known issues….
p.s from the serversdirect ‘about’ page it states:
“Servers Direct is owned and *operated* by leading IT Company *Easy Computers*”
so you’re not really that far removed from the parent co. with all the issues previously mentioned are you?…..that would be the same parent co. that adds buyers to it’s internal mailing list so other co’s in the group can spam them with emails eg from ‘aircondirect’…
No need to go private with this thanks – just want people to know the kind of company serverdirect’s parent co and sister co’s are…
[Reply]
Hi all,
I wanted to respond to this thread as I felt it was going somewhat off the rails.
I feel that James from ServersDirect has displayed he is open to direct contact from any discontented customers and will do his best to try and resolve any issue. If for some reason you feel this is you then jump at this opportunity as how often does a company encourage this direct form of contact these days? He has also acknowledged that they (ServersDirect) are currently not offering the cheapest pricing around the ML115 G5 Quad Core at the moment though has mentioned that they will be making attempts to re-allign their pricing shortly. I’m not sure what else they could offer?
With my limited spare time I try and blog any deals I come across that I think others may benefit from – though welcomed the approach from James at ServersDirect who proactively contacted me with the original ML115 Quad Core deal. Any such deals, if competitive at the time, are always welcomed if I think it will benefit TechHead readers and save them a few £,$,Euro, etc (delete where applicable).
I want to take this opportunity to point out that I am in no way associated with or work for ServersDirect and purchase my kit through whoever is offering the best deal and that I am comfortable with purchasing from.
I’ve purchased a couple of my ML110′s with e200 disk controllers from ServersDirect (as stated in a previous blog post) and have found them good and reliable. That said I have also purchased other ML110 and ML115′s from other vendors with a similar experience (albeit a few problems with the courier in one instance and a lack of stock in another).
It appears prices on this server have fluctuated somewhat over the last month not just at ServersDirect but across the board. If anyone finds the same item somewhere else cheaper and they genuinely hold stock then as always feel free to leave posting to let others know. I encourage this as we live in a free market.
I have experienced a few times, as FluffCat has also, various online vendors who claim to carry stock but after placing an order these large numbers of stock mysteriously disappear – and the hassle of trying to get a refund ensues.
I appreciate that FluffCat may be weary of ServersDirect because of their association with EasyComp (not that I’ve ever had any dealings with any of EasyComps other companies) though I recommend to anyone if you’re unhappy or unsure with a supplier or feel they are not offering you the best deal then let your wallet do the walking and find a supplier you are happy with and trust.
FluffCat I hope you don’t take offence as your initial comments around availability and the good pricing you discovered (despite being let down by stock availability) are valued.
Anyway, that’s all I’m going to say on the matter. I totally appreciate and encourage comments from all readers though at the same time want to try and keep the site free from getting bogged down in any such lengthy discussions. Especially if an avenue to resolve any issues from a purchase has been offered as is the case in this instance.
Thanks for your understanding,
Si

Just a note to everyone (& James, if you can help that would be great!). We ordered a ML115 and insight card from serversdirect a couple of days ago in the same order basket (with some other items). It looks like serversdirect created two seperate invoices from this single order, one with the ML115 and one with everything else.
One of the terms of HP’s free insight card offer is that both items must be present on the same invoice to qualify.
I suggest that for people ordering from SD to place a note in the order confirming a single invoice requirement for these items – could save some pain when attempting to claim it back from HP!
James: I’ve sent a ‘eMessage’ on your website requesting a single invoice for our order. I’m hoping this will be cleared up quickly – something to note for future orders coming in?
Cheers,
Matthew

CityStink finally deliverd mine from micom on friday evening after me complaning – all on one invoice thankfully. Ypu’d think serversdirect would be aware of this requirement since they even link directly to the promotion….
[Reply]
Hi guys,
Contrary to what HP state, it is actually ok to submit multiple invoices (together) and many customers have done this successfully.
We know the guys very well in the HP promotions team so if anyone has any problems or queries, just give us a shout and we’ll get it sorted for you.
Thanks
James.
[Reply]
Hi,
HP are sympathetic with the claims. I overran on last year’s ml110 promo which were invoiced 4-5 days after the cut off date due to lack of stock from insight but they still honoured the deal.
cheque arrived a good 28 days later, so be patient!!!
[Reply]
Thanks for this. Great site. Went for 2 of these but no more iLO card in stock but was told the invoice can be back dated. Seems like the servers will be under a separate invoice. Hope this is OK. Also, Play are doing an awesome deal on RAM at the moment, and if you Google play and rac…you can get another 5% off. Let me know if you need more details.

I ordered one from serversdirect today too, good people to deal with. I did noticed they are down to <20 now so if they run out, another good bet maybe IT247 and they are a fiver cheaper with free 7 day delivery.

Hello Tyn
Out of curiosity when did you receive your card? I’m still waiting for mine since 18 Dec.
You need this form http://h40059.www4.hp.com/proliantinsightcontrol/pdf/ICE%20Free%20Insight%20Nov_Dec%2008%20Claim%20Form.pdf
with a copy of your invoice and send them to the address on the form.
[Reply]
Happy New Year everyone, just to let you know that stock is now coming available again on the iLO card and you should receive back orders in the next couple of days.
Apologies for the delay but HP didn’t anticipate the success of the promotion and were completely out of stock.
The good news is that they have extended the promo into January so claiming the cashback won’t pose any issues.
Any questions just ask…
Thanks James.

Its a shame you gave about 60 minutes notice, the 1st chance I have had to get to your website today and the price is already 200 pounds
I dont understand how the price changes if HP are going to change the price ? Surely you get rid of your existing stock, re-stock from HP and then advertise a new price ?
Looks like i’ll have to get my servers else where ? unless there is something you can do to help hold the price ?
[Reply]
Just bought mine today from cbccomputers.com
£150.65 inc vat. They’ve got 1 more in stock after I checked out.
By the way, Crucial selling 4gb (2X2gb) RAM for this server, direct from their uk site £40.24 inc vat + free del. sweet… 8-))
[Reply]
Hi Simon,
Tried to give as much notice as I could sorry
but only found out about the increase from HP yesterday myself.
Our replacement cost on these is over £350 so I need to manage the stock accordingly as we made next to nothing on them at the lower price as many resellers who didn’t even have stock were putting silly prices out there (see above). Others are already at the higher price, I’m trying to soften the blow gently but appreciate your disappointment, still a bargain though at £199.
[Reply]
My reference to ‘silly prices see above’ wasn’t aimed at you sorry Tyn-I replied as you’d posted

The refunds are handled by an outsourced call centre and sometimes they can get a bit confused…always recified in the end though

Hello all,
Anybody got a perc 5/i controller working with HP ML 115 G5?
I’m still waiting for a decent RAID controller at ~£150 before I start using my my G5 with ESXi.
Are people using the supplied seagate hard drives or are they using something else? I want to use raid 5 with 4 hard drives and was going to buy two more seagate 250GB drives.
Thanks
[Reply]
Why would you bother with the cost of RAID ? Is this for performance or reliability ? Just get the largest disk you can and use that ? Its fairly trivial to setup some scripts to backup any ‘really’ important virtual machines to an NFS share …..
[Reply]
Simon,
I want reliability and some performance. Some of my Vm’s will have Oracle 10g on and some performance would be an advantage.
[Reply]
I’m a bit confused, 10g will run just fine in a Virtual Machine, I’m willing to bet that you definetly wont be I/O bound, more than likely cpu or memory will be your issue (if anything).
Dont waste your money on trying to speed up disk i/o, use that money to buy more memory and/or another server.
Just my 2p

Apologies for the delay.

Planning to get one of these servers for testing with Windows Server 2008 64bit and to use Hyper V. Anyone had any issues doing this?
[Reply]
Hi Ian,
I’ve only used them so far to run VMware ESX (which they do just fine). I am planning to install Windows Server 2008 R2 Beta sometime soon – real keen to try it out. Will probably blog a post about it.
If you end up getting one, let us know how you get on.
Cheers,
Si

Tried installing ESXi today, but failed at the first hurdle with…
“…unable to find supported device to write the Vmware ESX Server to…”
I’ve had a read of your posting dated Nov 20th – but don’t quite follow it? Are you suggesting running the ESXi setup from USB? I burnt the downloaded iso to CD and tried from that. Perhaps you mean actually installing onto the USB pen, sorry for being a bit thick!
[Reply]
Hi Ian,
In that particular posting I installed ESXi U3 onto a USB key. I have found this to work fine. The only time I had an issue was when I was running quite a few VMs and the available memory was quite low and I then received a PSOD (Purple Screen of Death). This may however just have been a one-off.
Follow the instructions for installing ESXi onto a USB key – the link to a good step by step guide is on the posting.
You can perform a tweak to the install which will allow the server to run from disk though this involves a bit of hackery. Depends how keen you are feeling.
Hope the helps,
Si

Thanks for the extra info, I’ll give it a go next week. Do you have a link to your suggested tweak to get it get it to run from the hard drive? I found this about the USB pen install…

Guys…I just ordered the ML115 yesterday for £220.00 from CBC Computer.

Well folks… as an update on my ML115 purchase… I didn’t receive the iLO refund as per the offer within 30 days as promised.
I chased it on Friday and was told today by the Promotions partner that they are waiting on funds from HP before they can send me a cheque.
No timescales suggested from their end.
No return business from mine

just to be clear… this is no reflection on the folks at Servers Direct.

Got ESXi working via the USB pen, thanks for the help. Currently got Server 2008 SP1 64-bit and Windows 7 beta 32-bit VMs setup for testing. Found a good article at…
http://www.petri.co.il/virtual_increase_vmware_performance.htm
about how to improve performance, but with both my VMs running they’re painfully slow?
Haven’t been able to install the VMware tools on Windows7, but even without, I’m surprised at how slugish the system is? I’ve got 4GB RAM installed on the host HP Server.
[Reply]
Hi Ian,
What disk configuration are you running in your ESXi server? You should be getting pretty decent performance with just the 2 VM’s (assuming they aren’t doing anything too intensive).
Cheers,
Si

Just the 250GB drive that came with the server. I’ve only boosted the memory to 4GB, everything else is out of the box.

No sure what I’ve done differently, but I’ve now been able to install VMware tools on Windows 7 and its working much better now. Haven’t had Server 2008 vm running at the same time though.
Also used the VMware converter to convert one of our physical servers to a vm and can run that under ESXi, which is pretty clever (not me, I mean the technology!).

Hi Ian,
That’s good news! VMware Tools will almost always make a significant difference to performance of a VM. In fact (how’s this for good timing
) check out my new blog posting on reasons why to install VMware Tools on an ESX Guest OS.

Virtualization is a great technology there are so many great reasons to implement it and very few not to.
All the best,
Si
