Hands on Review – HP Proliant DL380 G6

Hewlett Packard (HP)

The HP Proliant DL380 is HP’s most popular model of server in their Proliant range and for good reason. The recent G6 model with its use of Intel’s Nehalem Processors, it’s ability to house 192GB of DDR3 memory and decent IO expansion capabilities makes this server an excellent candidate for use as a virtualization host in an virtualized server environment.

  1. A really good server and a nice upgrade from the G5. It’s good to see that you can now get more memory in there however remember that you have to evenly space them between the two processors (so order the server with a little RAM as possible).

    Hi Stuart,

Good point, re: the spacing of RAM. I bet this has caught a few people out.

    All the best,

    Simon :)

HP’s design needs to change, the faceplate looks so out dated. I know that’s not exactly a great way to judge a system but they should consider a face lift on their products after 20+ years. dell’s new stuff is sexy.

    Hi Ken,

Maybe a little silver trim is in order? I’m just glad of the day when they moved away from Compaq biege. :)

    Cheers,

    Simon
